2010 All-Star MLB Picks That Were Left Out and Stars Baseball Fans Want to See
The two biggest stars of this year's MLB All-star game are American League catcher Joe Mauer from the Minnesota Twins and National League first basemen Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals. Both Mauer and Pujols received the most votes in their league although the first half of the MLB season has been the year of the pitcher.
In the National league, the top MLB picks for pitchers were Ubaldo Jimenez of the Colorado Rockies and Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies. These were the top vote getters amongst pitchers in the National league although the baseball world wanted to see Washington National's rookie sensation Stephen Strasburg and his 100 miles an hour fast ball. Strasburg only pitched five games this season while Halladay is 9-7 with a 2.42 ERA and Jimenez is 14-1 with an ERA of 2.27. Jimenez and Halladay's votes are well deserved although Strasburg could have easily replaced Chris Carpenter or Tim Hudson as he is bound to be the pitcher of the future.
A rookie phenom who did get the voted into the All-star game was 20-year old Jason Heyward who was the NL rookie of the Month back in April when he batted.240 with six homeruns and 19 RBI's although he went on a 1-16 slump and dropped his average to.251 since April 30th. Hayward has been on the 15-day disabled list with bruised left thumb and probably will not play in this game but his hot start and hype in the beginning of the season increased his popularity to get the fans votes. His votes as a National League starter definitely snubbed well deserving players such as Corey Hart, Colby Ramus and Josh Willingham who didn't even make the team although he was who was third in the league in on base percentage second to only Albert Pujols.
The American league's top MLB Picks for starting pitchers are the NY Yankees CC Sabathia and Tampa Bay's David Price although they left out the AL pitchers' Jered Weaver and Felix Hernandez who were tied in the league for quality starts. Jered Weaver of the LA Angels, this year's host of the 2010 All-star game lead the American league in strikeouts while posting a 1.70 ERA in eight home starts this season was definitely the most deserving of all the players in the AL who were left out.
Although there will always be a debate on who should have made the All-star team every year, the game is special for the fans of major League baseball and they should get to see who they want. Well deserved players were left out but the high profile stars of baseball players will be there to put on a show in baseball's greatest showcase of stars.
